Organised by Warsaw Institute and The Warsaw Institute Review expert debate called “Donald Trump vs. Joe Biden. The vision of foreign affairs, energy and economic politics of the USA” took place on 16 Sept. It was broadcasted online via our channels in social media. We cordially invite you to watch the material of this event.
The presidential election in the USA is on the home stretch and the polls show a slight advantage of Joe Biden over Donald Trump. The differences between the candidates are noticeable not only when their traits of character or beliefs are concerned, but also in their attitude to foriegn affairs of the USA. The recent years of Donald Trump’s presidency have shown us what his vision of foreign affairs is. Nonetheless, the global political situation is constantly changing permanently and the White House administration is facing challenges which are crucial in the context of maintaining the status of the global hegemon. What is the direction Washington will be heading after the election? Is it possible to ease the US-China relations? What is the future of Fort Trump and what will be the bilateral relations of Warsaw and Washington? Is a reset of the American-Iranian relations possible after Joe Biden’s victory?
These and many other questions were answered by the invited experts:
• Daniel Pogorzelski – an author and associate of the Warsaw Institute Review and a correspondent of WIR in Chicago, an expert on Polish-American relations, the USA and Polish diaspora
• Michał Kuź – doctor of political science, an employee of the Lazarski University. A graduate of Louisiana State University, the American Studies Center of the University of Warsaw and the Faculty of English at AMU. A Fulbright Foundation scholar and a member of the Philadelphia Society.
The meeting was moderated by Paweł Pawłowski – the chairman of the Warsaw Institute Foundation and an expert of the Warsaw Institute on international cooperation and the US politics.
The experts started by discussing the current political situation in the USA in terms of the upcoming election. The main issues of the race for the presidency in the context of the current social, economic and COVID-19 problems were discussed. Nevertheless, the speakers focused on the matters related to Washington’s foreign and energy politics. Much attention was paid to the trade war against China and the question of whether a possible rotation in the presidential chair could lead to changes in this matter. The issues of the relations with the European Union and the subject of Nord Stream 2 were debated. It was equally interesting to look at the relations between Warsaw and Washington and the construction of Fort Trump. Both experts shed an interesting light on the development of the US-Iranian relations, especially in the context of Israel establishing diplomatic relations with other Arab states.
The participants of the debate agreed that the result of the election is extremely difficult to predict. However, they decided to answer this extremely difficult question. We invite you to watch the material on YouTube and see if you think alike.”
