Belarusian presidential election – Continuation or Change?

On August 6, 2020, the debate “Belarusian presidential election – continuation or change?” took place. The RODM online debate was organized in cooperation with the Regional Center for International Debate in Wrocław, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Warsaw Institute.

The debate was attended by:
– Kamil Kłysiński – a chief specialist of the Ukrainian, Belarusian and Moldavian team at the Center for Eastern Studies. Author of numerous publications on Belarusian policy. The translator of the Alexander Lukashenka’s biography by Valery Karbalewicz entitled “Alexander Lukashenko. Political portrait.”
– Marek Budzisz – historian and experienced manager, previously a journalist. Strategy & Future and Nowa Konfederacja expert. In the years 1997-2001 advisor to the Minister of the Head of the Chancellery of the Office of the Council of Ministers and the Minister of Finance.

The meeting was chaired by Piotr Piss, consultant in RODM Wrocław.

The invited experts analyzed the Belarusian presidential election 3 days before the scheduled vote. They agreed that the most serious candidates were Alexandr Lukashenko, who was seeking another re-election, and the wife of the arrested candidate, Swiatlana Cichanouska. This year, Lukashenko, who has been ruling Belarus for 26 years, has to deal not only with the coronavirus pandemic but also with the politically awakening society, which is increasingly demanding transparency of power and democratic elections. We invite you to watch the recording of the debate in which our guests told more about the situation in Poland’s eastern neighbor, possible scenarios, and the future of Belarus.
